Uniquely Kansas City

This seasonally-themed magazine show carries on a tradition that began in 2000, in our five part series about the history of the arts, Uniquely Kansas City.

Spring, summer, winter and fall editions will showcase the wealth of music, theatre, dance and visual arts that make this town special. From downtown to the Crossroads, 18th & Vine to the suburbs, the metro is more alive than ever with talented, creative people whose works deserve to be seen.

Fall

KCPT continues to showcase all that is art in its video magazine, Uniquely Kansas City. The fall edition of Uniquely Kansas City will first air on November 20 at 8 p.m.

In this edition, hosts Randy Mason and Steph Suetos will explore the Day of the Dead event at the Mattie Rhodes Center and join the Lyric Opera on their 50th birthday for La Boheme. They will profile artists such as Dierk Van Keppel, who specializes in fine art glass, painter Lisa Lala, and sculptor Jim Leedy, just to name a few.

Randy will visit some of Kansas City's independent bookstores and movie theaters, while Steph goes to "Dance in the Park" and later sits down with dancer Jennifer Owen from Owen/Cox Dance Group.

From galleries to film festivals to performance art, Uniquely Kansas City will celebrate them all in this fall edition.

Uniquely Kansas City has been made possible by a generous grant from the Miller Nichols Charitable Foundation, J.B. Reynolds Foundation and Dr. Fred and Lou Hartwig.

Summer

Our town is rich in music and theatre, dance, design and all kinds of visual art. From the very beginning, Kansas City's embrace of the arts has helped make this a truly special place—the "Paris of the Plains" as it was sometimes described.

Now it seems that the 21st Century is more active than ever. In the summer edition of KCPT's seasonal arts magazine, hosts Randy Mason and Steph Suetos will focus on outdoor activities that typically bloom in the heat, including Starlight Theatre and Shakespeare In the Park. They'll also explore the continuing growth of the Crossroads Arts District, which draws large crowds to its annual 18th Street Fashion Show.

Look for pieces on the wonders of Powell Gardens, a mural-painting project in downtown KCK, the "art" of fireworks displays and a profile of a man who's made a name playing his music for youngsters—Jim "Mr. Stinky Feet" Cosgrove. Plus much more of the people, places and products that make this Uniquely Kansas City.

The hour-long show will premiere on Thursday, August 14 at 8 p.m. with repeat broadcasts August 18 at 9 p.m and August 31 at 6 p.m.

Uniquely Kansas City has been funded in part by the Miller Nichols Charitable Foundation, J. B. Reynolds Foundation and Dr. Fred & Lou Hartwig.

Spring

In the first installment, on May 15 at 8 p.m., hosts Randy Mason and Steph Suetos will meet Eric Rosen, the new Artistic Director at the KC Rep, and visit the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre's new home. They'll learn more about the Kansas City Chorale's five Grammy nominations, and the highlights of the Hallmark Photo Collection, now housed at the Nelson-Atkins Museum.

A radio comedy troupe, a new performance space in Crown Center and art that appears in everything from wedding cakes to giant outdoor installations will also be featured as KCPT celebrates these and other arts activities that make this Uniquely Kansas City.

Uniquely Kansas City has been funded in part by the Miller Nichols Charitable Foundation, J. B. Reynolds Foundation and Dr. Fred & Lou Hartwig.
